Understand Curse of Binding
Useful when…
- Keeping a particular wearable item equipped
- Recognizing the risk before equipping cursed armor or an elytra
What it does when equipped
The curse prevents changing the affected armor slot while the item remains equipped. In Survival, removal becomes possible if the player dies or the item breaks; Creative mode also allows removal. The curse does not stop the item from being moved around in inventory while it is unequipped.
Affected equipment and exceptions
It can appear on armor and other equippable items, including elytra, carved pumpkins, and mob heads. For items without durability, and for elytra, death is the stated way to remove the equipped item in Survival. If the keep-inventory rule is enabled, death retains the cursed item, so breakage is the remaining ordinary removal route where the item can break. Placing and breaking a cursed carved pumpkin or mob head removes its curse.
Practical caution
Do not equip an unfamiliar cursed item casually: a grindstone or crafting table will not remove Curse of Binding. The enchantment is treasure-only in the supplied reading, with fishing, librarian trading, and non-village structure loot listed as sources. It is not a protective effect; its practical value is limited to situations where keeping the selected item equipped is desired.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- It can preserve a chosen equipped item, but greatly restricts ordinary gear changes.
- Items that cannot break may remain equipped until death or Creative-mode removal.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Equipping a cursed item before checking whether it can be removed.
- Assuming a grindstone or crafting-table combination will clear the curse.
- Expecting death to remove the item when keep-inventory is enabled.
