Understand Frost Walker
Useful when…
- Freezing qualifying source water near the wearer while on the ground
- Avoiding stepping damage from magma blocks and campfires
Water conditions and radius
Frost Walker has a maximum level of II and applies to the listed chainmail, copper, diamond, golden, iron, leather, and netherite boots. The location effect requires the wearer to be on the ground and not riding a vehicle. It can replace source water at the same height as the block beneath the wearer if the water has air above it and is unobstructed. The Java radius is 3 blocks at level I and 4 at level II; the effect rule clamps it at 16 blocks. Flowing water is not affected. The ice gradually melts after the wearer stops walking on it, and sunlight can hasten melting.
Stepping protection
Frost Walker prevents damage from stepping on magma blocks and campfires, including the hot sulfur cube case named in the reading. These blocks do not damage the boots’ durability. Frost Walker does not protect against lava.
Depth Strider and acquisition
In Survival, Frost Walker and Depth Strider cannot be combined on one pair of boots. The reading identifies Frost Walker as a treasure enchantment obtainable from jungle temple and stronghold chest loot, fishing, or librarian trades; it does not list enchanting tables as a source.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Freezes only qualifying source water within its radius while the wearer meets the location conditions; the ice is temporary.
- Prevents stepping damage from magma blocks and campfires, but does not protect against lava.
- Mutually exclusive with Depth Strider in Survival.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Expecting it to freeze flowing water or water without air above it.
- Assuming the effect works while swimming or riding, or that frosted ice remains permanently.
- Treating magma and campfire protection as lava protection.
- Trying to combine it with Depth Strider in Survival.
