Chain and solid armor
Chain armor is flexible and good against slashing weapons, but less effective against the crushing force of blunt weapons. Solid pieces such as breastplates, greaves, and gauntlets are rigid and more widely effective.
How it works
The source also notes solid armor is heavier. The effectiveness of a piece depends largely on the weapon used against it, so choosing between flexible chain and rigid solid pieces involves matching protection to likely attacks while accounting for weight.
