Dwarf Fortress

Fortress development depends on matching dwarves’ skills and labor assignments to the work you need done. Skill improves task speed or effectiveness, and skills grow through use. This reference follows a focused path from digging and farming to metal production, weapons, and armor. Equipment has distinct material and coverage tradeoffs, so consider the work available at your site and the needs of your fortress when choosing what to develop.

Common mistakes to avoid

Farm plots need suitable ground and crop type

Plots can be built on soil or muddied rock; the crops available depend on whether the plot is above ground or subterranean.

Metal armor is made by an armorsmith

The Armorsmith skill makes metal armor and shields. Leather armor is made by a leatherworker, so metalworking does not cover that equipment.

Ranged weapons have a melee limitation

Crossbows, bows, and blowguns are ranged weapons, but users wield them as melee weapons if opponents engage them at close range.

References & guide scope

Reference to fortress development choices: selected work skills, metalworking roles, materials, and manufactured equipment. Does not cover Adventure mode or provide a complete skill catalog.

  • Evidence windows support a selection of skills, metalworking choices, and equipment, not a full fortress progression guide.
  • Several mechanics pages identify themselves as version 53.16/current-version pages; details may need updating. Older DF2014 sources were not used for mechanics claims.

Explanations prepared with GPT-6 Luna and checked against the linked references. These are source-reviewed guides. They do not establish independently tested optimal builds or exact upgrade budgets. How coverage works.
