Understand Knockback
Useful when…
- Create distance from ordinary mobs during close combat.
- Use on a sword when sweep attacks should also push affected targets away.
What does it change?
Knockback adds horizontal knockback: its effect-rule value is 1 at level I and increases by 1 for each level above I, reaching 2 at level II. The reference describes the practical result as 2.586 additional blocks per level over an unenchanted, non-sprint attack. It also raises vertical knockback from 0.8125 to 1 block, regardless of enchantment level. Its added horizontal push stacks with sprint knockback, and sword sweep attacks are affected. These distances describe knockback, not guaranteed travel in every encounter: damage immunity and target resistance can prevent or limit the effect.
When is it useful, and what can receive it?
It applies to swords and spears across the listed wood, stone, copper, iron, gold, diamond, and netherite tiers. The extra separation can help when a player needs room to reposition or avoid repeated close-range contact. Since it also pushes targets away, it can work against keeping a target close for follow-up melee hits. Spear charge attacks made with the spear in the offhand do not apply it in Java Edition. Iron golems, wardens, and shulkers are unaffected; squids and glow squids resist knockback while out of water.
How should you weigh levels and anvil cost?
The enchantment reaches level II. It has an anvil book multiplier of 1 and item multiplier of 2, so the item multiplier is higher when combining enchanted items; those multipliers do not specify a complete experience price on their own. Level II increases the described horizontal push over level I, while the vertical increase is the same at either level. Favor the extra level when stronger separation is useful to your combat approach.
What can block or limit the effect?
In Java Edition, a shield-blocked attack does not apply Knockback, and damage immunity also grants immunity to its effect. Knockback is not a reliable way to move every target: iron golems, wardens, and shulkers ignore it, and squids and glow squids resist it outside water. Do not expect the enchantment on an offhand spear charge attack to push its target.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Pushing a target away can create breathing room but also move it out of immediate melee range.
- The vertical increase is fixed at 1 block regardless of level.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Expecting Knockback to affect iron golems, wardens, or shulkers.
- Assuming a Java Edition shield-blocked attack still applies the enchantment's knockback.
- Expecting the enchantment to work on a spear charge made with the spear in the offhand.
