Understand Sharpness
Useful when…
- Increase damage on repeated eligible melee hits against a broad range of targets.
- Use on a sword, axe, or spear when a specialized incompatible damage enchantment is not the intended choice.
Damage by level
In Java Edition, Sharpness adds 1 HP at level I, then 0.5 HP for each additional level: level II adds 1.5 HP, III adds 2 HP, IV adds 2.5 HP, and V adds 3 HP. These are added damage values per eligible hit, not total weapon damage. The enchantment has a maximum of V and is supported on the listed swords, axes, and spears.
Choose a compatible weapon and attack
Sharpness supports sword, axe, and spear tiers from wooden through netherite, including copper. A spear charge attack made with the spear in the offhand does not receive Sharpness, so keep the weapon's hand and attack mode in mind when relying on its damage increase. The supplied reading's weapon damage examples assume fully charged Java attacks and targets without armor; they should not be read as a promise of the same final damage against every target.
Investment and incompatible enchantments
Levels improve the bonus in half-HP steps after the first level, topping out at 3 HP per hit at V. The supplied anvil multipliers are 1 for a book and 1 for the item. Sharpness is incompatible with Bane of Arthropods, Smite, Breach, Density, and Impaling. Bane of Arthropods and Breach appear among the comparison candidates, but their effects are not supplied here, so their specialized value cannot be assessed from this information. Choose Sharpness when the broad per-hit damage increase is useful; a candidate is not automatically a substitute.
Limits to keep in view
The level bonus is a Java Edition damage value and should not be mixed with Bedrock figures. Offhand spear charge attacks are an explicit exception, and armor or attack conditions can change the result from the reading's unarmored, fully charged examples. Sharpness applies through the weapon's damage rule; it does not establish a benefit for unrelated utility actions.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Provides a general per-hit damage bonus, but cannot share an item with several specialized damage enchantments.
- Each level above I adds only 0.5 HP, making later levels smaller steps than the first.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Expecting Sharpness to apply to an offhand spear charge attack.
- Trying to combine it with Bane of Arthropods, Smite, Breach, Density, or Impaling.
- Treating the bonus as final damage against armored targets or as identical across editions.
