Understand Fortune
Useful when…
- Increasing drops from Fortune-affected resources when the tool can harvest them
- Increasing yields from selected crops, leaves, and other eligible sources
Levels and applicable tools
Fortune has a maximum level of III and applies to the listed copper, diamond, golden, iron, netherite, stone, and wooden axes, hoes, pickaxes, and shovels. The correct tool is not required for Fortune’s drop effect, but the tool must still be able to harvest the block for its drops.
Drop changes vary by resource
For the common ore group named in the reading—coal, diamond, emerald, lapis lazuli, iron, copper, gold, Nether gold, quartz, and amethyst—Fortune I, II, and III average 1.33×, 1.75×, and 2.2× the normal drops. These are averages across random outcomes, not guaranteed multipliers for an individual block. Other sources use different distributions or changed drop chances; examples in the reading include redstone, glowstone, melons, Nether wart, leaves, gravel, seeds, creaking hearts, twisting vines, and weeping vines.
Limits and Silk Touch
Some drops have caps: the reading gives capacities of four glowstone dust, five sea-lantern crystals, and nine melon slices. Fortune and Silk Touch are mutually exclusive in Survival. If commands apply both, Silk Touch takes precedence on blocks affected by both enchantments.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Can increase eligible drops, but the size and chance of the increase vary by resource.
- Cannot be combined with Silk Touch in Survival.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating average multipliers as guaranteed drops.
- Assuming Fortune affects every block or that every listed tool can harvest every affected resource.
- Expecting Fortune and Silk Touch to coexist in Survival.
