Understand Silk Touch
Useful when…
- Collecting blocks for placement or transport in their original form
- Mining certain ores as ore blocks instead of their usual resource drops
- Moving a bee nest or occupied beehive while retaining its bees
What changes when you mine a block?
Silk Touch changes drops for supported blocks; for example, stone drops as stone rather than cobblestone, and glass can be collected instead of breaking into nothing. Some ores that normally yield resources can drop as blocks when mined with the appropriate tool tier. The enchantment also sets block experience to zero, so this tool is not for collecting mining experience.
Which tool should carry it?
The enchantment supports pickaxes, shovels, axes and hoes across the listed material tiers. The required tool still matters: examples in the Java reading include a pickaxe for stone and a stone pickaxe or better for copper ore. Silk Touch can preserve bee nests and occupied beehives, including their bees, when mined with the enchanted tool.
When is it a good investment?
Keep a Silk Touch tool for jobs where the block itself is the useful output: decorative building materials, ore blocks for later handling, or blocks whose normal drop is undesirable. It has only one level, so there is no level-up decision.
What does it not collect?
Silk Touch cannot collect every block: budding amethyst, spawners, reinforced deepslate, suspicious sand and gravel, and several other listed blocks remain unavailable through it. It is incompatible with Fortune; if commands force both onto one item, Silk Touch takes precedence for blocks affected by both. Silk Touch is not normally applicable to swords or fishing rods.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Preserves selected blocks but suppresses block experience.
- Incompatible with Fortune, so resource-multiplying and block-preserving jobs call for different tools.
- The appropriate tool tier remains necessary for some blocks.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Expecting Silk Touch to preserve blocks explicitly listed as unobtainable, such as budding amethyst or a monster spawner.
- Using it when the goal is block experience.
- Assuming it can be combined with Fortune in normal play.
