Understand Projectile Protection
Useful when…
- Reducing damage from arrows and thrown tridents.
- Reducing damage from shulker bullets, llama spit, blaze fireballs, and wind charges.
- Reducing direct impact damage from ghast fireballs and wither skulls.
What damage does it reduce?
Each level provides 8% projectile damage reduction, up to 32% at level IV. Covered sources include arrows, thrown tridents, shulker bullets, llama spit, blaze fireballs, and wind charges. It also reduces the direct impact damage from ghast fireballs and wither skulls, but not their explosion damage.
What armor can carry it?
Projectile Protection applies to the listed wearable armor, including helmets, chestplates, leggings, boots, and turtle helmets. The armor piece chosen does not localize the effect: putting it on leggings does not specifically protect the legs from projectiles. It provides damage reduction without the extra side effects noted for Blast Protection and Fire Protection.
How should I weigh it against other protection?
Projectile Protection is a specialized choice when projectile damage is the concern. It is mutually exclusive through ordinary anvil combining with Protection, Blast Protection, and Fire Protection. The reference states that protection effects share an 80% damage-reduction cap; Projectile Protection IV contributes 32% against projectiles, while the exact total also depends on other protection enchantments and the damage type.
Which attacks remain uncovered?
Despite being projectile-shaped or launched, splash potions of harming, dragon fireballs, firework rockets, and sonic booms are not treated as projectile damage for this enchantment. Ghast fireball and wither skull explosions are also not reduced; only their direct impact damage is covered. Do not select it expecting protection from every ranged or explosive attack.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Specializes in qualifying projectile damage rather than general damage reduction.
- Cannot ordinarily share one armor piece with Protection, Blast Protection, or Fire Protection.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming it reduces explosion damage from ghast fireballs or wither skulls.
- Expecting it to reduce splash potion, dragon fireball, firework rocket, or sonic boom damage.
- Combining it with another mutually exclusive protection enchantment at an anvil and expecting both to remain.
