Understand Mending
Useful when…
- Repair a held or worn damaged item while collecting experience.
- Maintain tools, weapons, armor, elytra, and other listed durable equipment through experience.
How does experience repair work?
Each point of experience in a collected orb repairs 2 durability on one eligible Mending item. Items in the main hand, offhand, or armor slots can receive the repair. The effect rule multiplies repair-with-experience by 2, matching the two durability points per experience point. If an item can be repaired, experience is prioritized for repair; leftover orb experience goes to the player's gauge.
Which item gets repaired?
When multiple damaged Mending items are equipped, the game randomly selects one for each orb. Fully repaired items are excluded, but damage amount does not improve an item's chance of selection. Only one item is repaired per orb; unused experience from that orb is not redirected to another damaged Mending item. This makes it useful to manage which damaged Mending gear is equipped when a particular item needs repair.
What can receive it, and what is the anvil multiplier?
Mending is listed for 83 items, including tools, weapons, armor, shields, bows, crossbows, tridents, fishing rods, and elytra. It has one level, so there is no level-up investment decision. Its anvil book multiplier is 2 and item multiplier is 4; these are combination multipliers, not a complete experience cost. Mending is incompatible with Infinity on the same item.
How can you avoid wasting repair opportunities?
Because each orb selects only one damaged equipped Mending item, wearing or holding several damaged pieces spreads repair opportunities randomly rather than targeting the most damaged one. A nearly repaired item has the same chance of selection as one close to breaking. If the goal is to prioritize one piece, remove other damaged Mending candidates from the applicable hand or armor slots while collecting experience.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Experience orbs prioritize repair for eligible damaged items, delaying experience-gauge gains.
- When several damaged Mending items are equipped, repair selection is random and only one item receives repair per orb.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Expecting one experience orb to repair several equipped Mending items.
- Assuming the most damaged item has a higher chance of being selected.
- Leaving several damaged Mending items equipped when trying to focus repairs on one item.
